What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?

What does discovery mean to me? Discovery means finding something new. In this picture, I am trying to find something interesting. When I am in the picture I am holding a microscope. This is what discovery means to me.

How can we, as Caine has inspired, demonstrate through teamwork our imagination, determination, and passion for creativity and innovation, with our own arcade constructions?

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?
The game I played was Sphere Runner. I am playing this game because in Discovery we are making arcade games, and we need to know how to make them. To play the game use the arrow keys to move the submarine and avoid the machines from hitting you with the fireball. You also have to use the arrow keys to go over the light blue circles. If you go over all of the circles, you go to the next level. If you win the game it takes you back to the first level. The person who created this game was David Carachelo. The rules are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Using a level of difficulty from 1-4, I would give it a 3 star rating.
To build the game I think I would need cardboard, tape, string, and lots of marbles. Color the string blue and the cardboard black. I think to build the game it would cost $250.00, to buy I think it would cost $100.00.

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of the arcade game is called Camilla & Bra’el’s Marble Maze. You play the game by moving the marble to get to the finish within the time limit. There are traps in the game that make the marble fall. So beware of them! The rules will be displayed on the front of the game. The level of difficulty is a 4 through a rating of 1-4. You win the game by getting through the maze within the time without falling into the traps. If you finish the maze when the timer goes off it does count. If you win the game you get a prize and tickets.
Our blueprint has a ticket hole, prize hole, and a timer. It also has a finish, start, and a maze.

The materials we need to build this game are tape, cardboard, marble, sharpie, prizes, tickets, and coins. We think the game will take us a few weeks to build the game. The problems we foresee to happen is the tape not holding things in place.

Try It Out

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mrs. Koska

Date: February 1, 2013

Praise: Good idea! Love the maze idea and all of the traps.

Question: How did you come up with the idea?

Polish: Maybe put a bag under the holes then someone does not have to be in the box.

Student Comment: Thank you for trying out my game, Marble Maze. I am glad you enjoyed it. We both came up with the idea of making the Marble Maze. We came up with the idea by writing down games. We both wrote down a marble maze game and that is what we chose. If we put bags under the maze, like you suggest, the marble would get stuck in the bag because the holes are not big enough for our hands to fit in.

Examiner: Mrs. Rottinghaus

Praise: Really fun! So creative! Love the “traps” and difficult challenges you set up. Great game!

Polish: Maybe you could color each path differently?

Question: Has any one finished the hard route?

Student Comment: Thank You! The traps were made to make the routes harder and harder. On the first one we did not put a lot of traps because we wanted it to be easier. The players finished the hard route on their second or third try. Or the same people came back and tried again. I think that is a very great idea to color the different routes. I would maybe color them with tape, but not marker, color pencils , or crayons. Thank you for playing our game.

Examiner: Ms. Waters

Date: January 28,2013

Praise: Very creative intro to the game! Specific explanation! I like the different option of levels. Good use of tools, excellent construction!

Question: How much time? How many tries does each player get?

Polish: Might want to let the player know how much time they get. Write it somewhere on the game.

Student Comment: Thank you for the comment. We wanted Marble Maze to have different options of levels. We also did that so the players could choose what level they wanted to do instead of just having one level. The time limit will be about one minute because it probably would not take that long to play. The players will get 3 tries to beat the game. Great idea! Thank you for reminding us to tell the players how much time they will get. The time would probably be about one minute.

Make It Better

How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?

Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

We can make our game better by making the directions more descriptive.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We could just retype the directions and tape it on the box.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned how to make a marble maze.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I know that it is really hard to build an arcade game.

What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I know that I can build an arcade game out of cardboard.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I learned how to build an arcade game and use good partnership.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could have brainstormed longer to think of more games.

A Final Reflection:

Camilla and I made the arcade game called Marble Maze. To make our game better we could list all of the directions. We can do this by retyping them. Through this project, I accomplished the goal of how to build an arcade game out of cardboard and duct tape. We started this project by brainstorming all the games we could think of. Then we chose the one we wanted, which was Marble Maze. After that we had to draw the game as we pictured it in our heads. Finally, we built the game with our cardboard and tape.
